Periodontics

The treatment of gum disease is known as periodontics. It is estimated that three out of every four adults are affected by gum disease. In order to prevent this serious problem, people must brush and floss their teeth on a regular basis. In addition, healthy gums also require routine professional dental cleanings.

For adults, gum disease is the main cause of tooth loss. After a tooth has been removed due to gum disease, it is expensive to replace. Not only that, but a person must sit through multiple procedures to fix the problem. A good dentist identifies problems early and comes up with a conservative treatment plan. Treating problems early is the best way to prevent more damage from occurring.

Gum Disease Causes and Symptoms

Poor oral hygiene is the primary cause of gum disease; however, it is not the only reason. There are a number of factors that can contribute to the disease. Some other causes include:

– Genetics
– High levels of stress
– Smoking or using other types of tobacco
– Medications
– Pregnancy/hormonal changes
– Clenching or grinding teeth
– Having a poor diet
– Obesity related diseases

Although gum disease is a relatively silent disease, there are warning signs. Symptoms of gum disease may include:

– Gums that are red, swollen and sore
– Receding gums
– Bad breath
– Teeth that are loose
– Bleeding gums while brushing or flossing
– Mouth sores
– Pus between the teeth and gums
– Changes in how dentures fit

Besides tooth loss, gum disease can also contribute to a number of other health related issues. For example, it has been known to contribute to heart disease and diabetes. In addition, gum disease can also play a role in pregnancy complications.

Prevention is one of the only ways to stop gum disease. It is essential for people to maintain a good oral health routine. Not only do people need to brush and floss, but they also need to go in for regular dental exams and cleanings.
