The goal of Endodontic (Root Canal) treatment is to preserve the natural tooth. Once a tooth is lost, it is gone forever and while there are excellent options for patients with missing teeth. Our goal is to save a patient’s natural tooth whenever possible.
Endodontics deal with the inside of a tooth, coming from the Greek words “Endo” for inside and “Odont” for “tooth”. Endodontic treatment or a root canal is needed when the tissue inside of the tooth becomes inflamed or infected. The causes of inflammation or infection can range from injury, trauma or failed dental work.
A root canal is often perceived as a painful and unpleasant dental procedure. Advances in modern dentistry including sedation dentistry make having a root canal a more comfortable and relaxing procedure. A root canal is a conservative dental treatment that will alleviate pain and discomfort typically associated with inflamed or infected pulp tissue.
Do I need a Root Canal?
Pain and sensitivity to hot or cold foods and beverages are the common symptoms of a patient in need of a root canal. Other symptoms include: soreness when chewing, discoloration of the tooth, swelling to the tissue surrounding the tooth and drainage or tenderness in the lymph nodes.

A majority of patients can retain their natural tooth with a root canal, however, there are times when a tooth can not be saved. In some cases, the infected area maybe so great that the natural tooth will not support a restoration. In these cases, our dentists will extract the tooth and recommend replacement options.
