Preventive Dental Care Peachtree City, GA

general dentistry peachtree city gaThe key to achieving optimal oral health is having a proper routine that includes daily home care and regular professional visits. At Vassey Dental Partners, your dentist will recommend a professional oral health care schedule based on the needs of each patient; it may be twice a year or more frequent depending on the individual.

Many of our patients comment on how thorough and comprehensive our examinations and dental cleanings are. Our dental cleanings are performed by a licensed dental hygienist. All teeth are inspected for signs of decay and gum disease. Identifying problems in the earliest stages allow us to recommend the most conservative treatment options, saving the patient from uncomfortable and expensive procedures.

For patients showing early signs of gum disease, scaling and root planing are non surgical methods used to remove bacterial plaque and tartar from deep pockets in the gum. Gum disease is a leading cause of tooth loss in adults. Many patients may have gingivitis, an early stage of gum disease, but not experience symptoms. Most problems can be detected during the dental cleaning to prevent future damage, infection or decay.

Dental cleanings are also very important to the oral health of children and adolescents. Establishing good routines early will create long term habits for proper oral health care. Children and adolescents are particularly susceptible to cavities and plaque and tartar build up. For children who are especially anxious, we do offer nitrous oxide. Our hygienists and dentists are experienced at working with children and understand their unique needs, striving to make them as comfortable as possible during their visit. We begin pediatric dental care at approximately three years of age.

Treatment For Tooth Cavities

Tooth cavities are, unfortunately, a very common dental problem for both kids and adults. Your dentist can usually identify cavities before you experience symptoms, so it is important to visit the dentist regularly for screenings and tooth cleanings.

Common signs of tooth cavities include:

  • Tooth pain
  • Sensitivity to hot or cold foods/drinks
  • Holes in the teeth
  • Sore gums or bleeding gums

What causes a tooth cavity?
Diet and hygiene are two of the biggest factors contributing to tooth cavities. Plaque is constantly forming in the mouth. When it interacts with sugar or starch from the food and drink we consume, it cultivates bacteria which then attack the tooth enamel. With time, the bacteria erodes tooth enamel, making the tooth vulnerable to cavity formation.

You can prevent cavities by eating fresh fruits and vegetables and limiting the number of sodas and candy in your diet. At some point, nearly everyone will be affected by a tooth cavity. The most significant contributing factor to tooth cavities is diet. You can actually avoid cavities by adopting a more healthy diet that includes less sugary and starchy foods and more water and fresh fruits and vegetables.

Treatment for Tooth Cavities
If you do have a tooth cavity or if your teeth are showing signs of decay, your dentist may recommend a number of general dentistry treatments to restore the tooth to proper health and minimize the risk of further decay.

A dental filling is usually the first line of treatment for a tooth cavity. Our dentists may use a composite resin dental filling, porcelain filling or gold filling. Dental crowns are used on teeth that are more severely affected by tooth decay. If the tooth decay is advanced and infecting the tooth pulp, a root canal may be needed to restore proper health and alleviate associated pain.

If a tooth has more significant decay or damage, you might be a candidate for an inlay or onlay, which are porcelain and/or gold restorations that are bonded to the tooth to hold it together and add strength and protection.

We believe that routine oral care builds the foundation for long term dental health. Identifying problems in the early stages allows us to recommend the most conservative methods for treatment, preserving as much of the natural tooth as possible and saving the patient from expensive and uncomfortable procedures.
